Hand coloured whales from the 1820s, riding waves through history and straight into your wardrobe
Whale Of A Time
Charming, characterful, and impossible not to smile at — Whale Of A Time is the Saltwater Edit at its most joyful. Available in two versions: the classic whale print, and the Whale + Wave edition which pairs the whale illustrations with the rolling wave pattern from our Tide And Seek print on the arms — a beautiful coordination between two of the Saltwater Edit's most beloved prints.
The whales were unearthed from the pages of Naturgeschichte der Säugetiere — the Natural History of Mammals — a monumental natural history encyclopedia from the early 1800s, illustrated by Swiss artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann through the then-pioneering technique of hand coloured stone lithography. Brodtmann clearly had enormous affection for his subjects — there is a warmth and personality to these whales that goes well beyond scientific documentation. We think he'd be quietly, enormously delighted to see them out here, riding waves and living their absolute best life.
